| Driving Safety Policies
Transportation to Scout outings is provided by parents. Every adult driver is asked to abide by following policies whenever Scouts are being transported:
Always make certain that every Scout is in a fastened seatbelt before moving the vehicle.
Never carry Scouts in the back of a pickup truck, covered or uncovered.
Maintain liability insurance coverage on your vehicle at least equal to the minimum required by current BSA minimums of $50,000/$100,000/$50,000.
Never consume alcohol within the period of time prior to driving Scouts or in the presence of Scouts.
Never allow anyone under the age of 21 operate the vehicle while Scouts are in the vehicle.
Always return Scout passengers to their parents or to another Scouter approved by Troop 35. NEVER leave Scout passengers unattended at the Church after returning from a Troop activity.
Always follow the "30 Minute Rule." (See Emergency Procedures)
Ask Scout passengers to wear a Scout uniform during travel to/from activities.
Remind Scout passengers that they represent Troop 35 and that their behavior at all stops should be appropriate.
Check to insure all Scouts are provided with meals, as the occasion warrants.
Ask about destination information/time and rendezvous points before departing.
Check vehicle maintenance to minimize the chances of a breakdown or delay.
Arrive at the departure point a few minutes early to allow for passenger assignments.
Finally, and most importantly, DRIVE SAFELY.
On Time Departures and Arrivals
There are specific procedures involved in going to and returning from Campouts or other events. Scouts should be given the responsibility to notify his transportation (family or not family) of the correct time to be at the Church for departure, and the correct time to pick him up on return. Parents MUST BE ON TIME when the Troop returns from a campout. Normal return time is about 11:00 AM, on Sunday at the Presbyterian Church parking lot. Most of us are tired and dirty at the end of the day and want to go home. If the return time is not predictable, a leader will specify the approximate time and will notify you that you will be called when the Troop arrives back.
"30 Minute Rule" If a parent fails to arrive within 30 minutes of the designated return time, the Scout will be taken to the home of the adult left in charge at the time. The Scout will call his home until he reaches someone who can come to the adult's home and pick him up.
If a parent feels a problem is about to occur or thinks that something is wrong, take a few minutes, calm down and review the logic of what to do. Then, get on the phone and obtain accurate information. The phone numbers are all on the Organization Chart, which is periodically updated.
We generally have a cell phone with an adult leader, and that number is printed on your copy of the Permission Slip.
Each family receives a copy of the Troop Roster on joining or with the Troop Newsletter. Keep the roster handy. The first call should be to the Scout's Patrol Leader, then down the list.
