| Troop 35 is the newest Boy Scout troop in Barrington. The troop was started in 1998 with the intention of providing boys with a meaningful scouting experience in a more personal environment. This sheet provides answers to frequently asked questions that new families may have.
When and where does the troop meet?
Monday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 at the Presbyterian Church in Barrington Hills. The Presbyterian Church is located on Brinker Road just off Lake Cook Road and south of Country Side School.
Does the troop meet every week?
The troop meets every week except for school holidays and the Monday after weekend outings. Typically there are 2-3 meetings per month. The troop does not meet during the summer months.
How many boys are in the troop?
The troop currently has 15 registered boys and has 10-12 boys at each event. The smaller number of boys makes it easy to develop relationships and receive personal attention from leaders.
What activities does the group do?
- Camping: we do 4-5 campouts per year, typically Friday and Saturday nights.
- Aviation: one campout each year is at Galt Airport, where the boys are exposed to aviation and will have the opportunity to experience what is involved in being a pilot.
- Hiking and Orienteering: hiking and experiencing the outdoors is a key focus.
- Architecture: the boys have done a combination architecture tour and orienteering in downtown Chicago.
- Horseback riding: horseback riding is available on several of our weekend outings.
- Fishing and boating: the boys often try to catch a trophy fish during free time.
- First Aid: the boys participate in a yearly First Aid Meet organized by the district.
Where are these activities?
Most troop outings are within one hour of Barrington. This provides boys with sports commitments to leave the campout and support their team while enjoying the weekend event.
Where does the troop go to summer camp and when?
We go each summer to Camp Napowan in Wildrose, Wisconsin. Camp is one week long and is always scheduled for the last full week in July.
Does the troop do high adventure activities?
High adventure activities require that boys are 14 years of age. Most of the boys in the troop are too young to attend these activities, but as the boys get more experience, we plan on taking groups to the Boundary Waters Canoe Base, Philmont and Colorado. Until we have enough boys to form a group, we will be matching older boys with other scout groups that are attending these high adventure events.
Does the troop do yearly fundraisers, like popcorn and wreaths?
We do not do fundraising activities. We currently cover the cost of camp equipment and events based on a $100 per boy annual dues. This eliminates the distraction of fundraising. However, as boys start to do more expensive high adventure activities, we will consider fundraising that will be specific to an event.
What community service projects does the troop take part in?
The troop does 5-7 hours of community service each year. Examples of these projects include picking up trash from along Brinker Rd, disposing of used computer monitors, painting and food pantry collections.
Who are the leaders of the troop and what experience do they have?
- Dan Pierce Scout Master Eagle Scout
- Tom Mueller Asst. Scout Master 10+ years of scout leadership
- Glenn Carson Asst. Scout Master 10+ years of scout leadership
- Adam Carson Asst. Scout Master Eagle Scout
- John Mueller Asst. Scout Master Eagle Scout
- Chuck Traxler Committee Chair Eagle Scout
What involvement do parents have in the troop?
It is important that parents take an active role in the Troop. There are multiple opportunities to participate and we require that each family select the best way for them to get involved. You can either participate on the troop committee or sign up to take part in troop outings. Our collection of personal skills keeps the troop running effectively.
